Aquaterra Co. in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 25-27 October 2008

ImageAQUATERRA CO. is one of the best aquarium shops I have seen in Hong Kong’s Nullah Road – in a corner where over 100 ornamental fish, aquatic plants and accessory stores can be found in mainly one road.

The owner Sunny is married to a German Lady and they have 3 lovely children. He opened up his first shop, Aqualife, in 2000 in Tong Choi Street. Two years later, he opened a new and much larger shop down the street, in the crossroad Nullah Road. This shop he designed up to the very last detail all by himself. It is an extremely functional shop with a second floor. Each aquarium has a powerful water pump lifting the water up into a mechanical filter chamber above the aquarium changing the entire aquarium water about once every 15 minutes. In addition, each aquarium has an individual new (tap) water supply (24-hours in the say dropping in) and an overflow – a perfect combination. Sunny also designed a very practical and beautiful aquarium plant rack, where each single plant can be seen and the customer can select it himself. Sunny imports fishes from all over the world and has specialized in rare to find, especially small fishes. And there is selection of shrimps and rare turtles as well. And Sunny sells Bleher’s Discus volume I in Hong Kong.

In a way Sunny revolutionized the aquarium hobby in the Hong Kong area by introducing all these small beauties and the hobby of small aquarists is constantly growing (despite the world-wide recession during the last few months …)

One enters Sunny’s shop and sees this beautiful arranged aquarium plant display. People have their choice to select their plants, or buy them ready, pre-packed in plastic bags

Each aquarium has its own nets, cup to place the fish or shrimp, individual filter and constant water drops entering in each aquarium 24 hours with an individual overflow

Sunny has always a huge selection of rare to find fishes from around the world like these loricariids (top), rare freshwater flounders, sucker catfishes and seldom seen loaches from China (the centre one in the lower photo was introduced for the first time into the hobby in the 1970s by Heiko)…

…and Sunny shows fishes as one should in a aquarium shop, like these  brilliant rummy nose tetras Hemmigrammus bleheri, which must be kept in groups than they school like here

And Sunny’s great helping hands take very well care of his plants and fishes all day long, from 11 am to 10 pm, 7 days a week

And late at night Sunny, who had a guest from Bogota, Colombia, the fish exporter Julio Romero, invited me to a great fish restaurant, where we could choose the live fishes we wanted to eat and had the best Peking duck available, which he had ordered the morning before.
