PAST

Heiko Bleher did his first aquascape, a 4000 l aquarium, at the IGA 1963 (Internationale Gartenausstellung) in Hamburg, Germany, at the time it was the largest International Garden Exhibition in the world. He decorated his aquarium as an authentic biotope of the Rio Guaporé in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Germany’s president, Heinrich Lübke, handed Heiko, for his mother’s company Lotus Osiris, his first Diploma for his work and appreciated the giant aquarium very much (for almost 10 minutes looking at it and asking questions…).

That was Heiko’s start of his participation in fairs & exhibitions worldwide.

Below is a list of some of the fairs, exhibitions & conferences he participated and/or helped to organize, to make them popular around the world – in the fish, aquatic plant as well as in the pet trade, in the hobby and under scientific communities. And some of those fairs & exhibitions have grown and became what they are today, because of his engagement (which some of today’s organizers like to forget…).

1968

–   INTERZOO 1968 – 1st. International Interzoo in Wiesbaden, Germany. Heiko

     participated and was the first Man in history to display a large aquarium with

     3000 cardinal tetras (Paracheirodon axelrodi) and 500 brillant rummy nose

     tetras, his discovery (many years later described as Hemigrammus bleheri)

     in an acuascape similar to nature. No one had ever seen such a combination

     and so many of those two fantastic aquarium fishes together in a single aquarium

     before …

1970

–   INTERZOO 1970 – Wiesbaden, Germany. Heiko’s stand on the second

     international Interzoo was in cooperation with Aquario Rio Negro and its owner,

     Hans-Willy Schwartz, who arrived together with his wife Robine from Manaus.

1972

–   INTERZOO 1972 – Wiesbaden, Germany.

1974

–   INTERZOO 1974 – Wiesbaden, Germany.

1976

–   INTERZOO 1976 – Wiesbaden, Germany.

1978

–   INTERZOO 1978 – Wiesbaden, Germany.

1980

–   INTERZOO 1980 – Wiesbaden, Germany. From 1980 on Heiko gave, during

     every following Interzoo which took place in Wiesbaden, a big party in his large

     Zeppelinheim house near Frankfurt airport, for fish people from around the world.  

1982

–   INTERZOO 1982 – Wiesbaden, Germany. Also for this and the following Interzoo

     (and his party’s) Heiko invited scientists, pet trade, wholesalers and retailers, as

     well as hobbyists from around the world.  

1984

–   INTERZOO 1984 – Wiesbaden, Germany. During this large his aquarium display

     of natural biotopes, Heiko showed for the first time new and rare sting rays he

     had collected.

1985

–   1° ZOOMARK 1985 – 1st. International pet exhibition in Florence, Italy.

1986

–   INTERZOO 1986 – Wiesbaden, Germany. Heiko displayed for the first time the

     freshwater sawfish he collected with Gordon Staples in northeastern Queensland

     in an exhibition. In a 4000 l aquarium, were he hand feed three of these unique

     and newly discovered Pristis species. It was a international sensation – one-of-a-

     kind display. In addition Heiko showed for the first time how an aquarium

     (ornamental-) fish shop should display its aquariums and fishes according to their

     habitat in nature. For small fishes, small habitats, for very large fishes large

     habitats, with or without plants according to their origin, etc. It was welcomed

     buy pet shop owners from around the world.

–   EXPO TOKYO – 1st. International Discus Exhibition, Tokyo, Japan. It was organized

     entirely by Koroko Company and Heiko Bleher. The discus were collected from the

     wild by Heiko and he also brought seven different tank breed new discus strains

     (shown for the first time) from Schmidt-Focke to Japan. The exhibit took place for

     two days only on the 44th floor of Tokyo’s World Trade Center building and 44,000

     visitors came to see it. After that people around the world became aware of the

     potential for international discus exhibitions and championships…

–   1st ZOOPHILIA’86 – Athens, Greece, October 16-19, 1986. Heiko has helped

     to promote this very first Greek Exhibition of Pets and Pets Products after the

     Exhibition manager Christos Petropolus had ask for Heiko’s help at the Interzoo

     1986 in Wiesbaden. And Zoophilia was a success.

1987

–   2nd  ZOOMARK 1987 – Florence, Italy. Heiko, together with Holger Windelov,

     owner of Tropica, participated with authentic biotope aquarium displays.

–   EXPOZOO 1987 – Paris, France. Together with the Sidoexo, the famous

     company owned by the Sidoli family, Heiko’s Grandfather and mother already

     worked with, he displayed his new discoveries from West Africa.

–   SCANPET – Copenhagen, Denmark, June 13-15, 1987. Heiko displayed new

     rainbowfishes (Chilatherina bleheri and others) for the first time during this first

     international Scandinavian Pet Fair.

–   2nd ZOOPHILIA’87 – Athens, Greece, October 16-19, 1987. Also for this second

     Greek Exhibition of Pets and Pet products Heiko has contributed and again

     with his stand.

–   13th INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF UNDERWATER ACIVITIES – Brighton,

     October 23-25, 1987.

–   EXPOAVIGA 87 – IV Professional Domestic Pet Show – Barcelona, Spain,

     November 24-27, 1987.  Aquarium Rio represented with the Heikomobile at the

     main entrance of the exhibition and with new fish species.

1988

–   INTERZOO 1988 – Nürnberg, Germany. Heiko just back from expeditions across

     African countries with the made-to-order and his own designed fish-collecting-

     vehicle on the base of an Mercedes-Unimog named Heikomobil, he exhibited

     it at the first Interzoo now taking place in Nürnberg.

–   FISHWORLD 88 – organized by the Federation of British Aquatic Societies –

     Alexandra Palace & Park, England, May 21-22, 1888.

–   BRITISH AQUARIST FESTIVAL – Manchester, England, September 10-11, 1988.

1989

–   BIENNALE INTERNATIONALE DE L’IMAGE DE NANCY – Programme de la

     participation de l’ Aquarium Tropical et du Cercle aquariophile de Nancy

     (25° anniversaire) – Nancy, France, January 21-29, 1989.

–   PET EXPOSITION & TRADE SHOW ’89 – Tampa, Florida, USA. March 11-12, 1989.

–   3rd ZOOMARK 1989 – Florence, Italy. Also this exhibition in Italy’s beautiful city

     was very successful and well attended internationally, because Heiko had engaged

     himself worldwide and invited trade people from around the globe to visit it and

     his stand.

–   EXPOZOO 1989 – Paris, France. This Expozoo was to be special, simply because

     Heiko Bleher presented parts of his gigantic book BLEHER The Fresh- and

     Brackishwater FISHES (see Projects). A book he had been working on since 1985.

–   1st. AQUARAMA 89 EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE – Singapore June 15-18, 1989.

     Heiko Bleher coordinated speakers from around the world for the first Aquarama,

     among others: Kamihata san, President of Hikari, Japan; Holger Windelov,

     President of Tropica, Denmark; Horst Kipper, President of Dupla, Germany; and

     others, he also send out invitation to all major companies from the pet-trade (and

     specially aquarium hobby). Heiko was also the head of judges for discus

     categories and gave the keynote speech.

1990

–   INTERZOO 1990 – Nürnberg, Germany, May, 1990. (Also 25th Anniversary of

     Aquarium Rio.)

–   AQUARIA EXPO 1990 – participation of Heiko Bleher and Aquarium Rio at the

     largest aquarium show in Australasia (at the time) in Auckland, New Zealand.

     Heiko gave also lectures at Kelly Tarltons for the Petlife Distributors and

     Auckland Aquarium Society. David John Cooper was the show manager.

1991

–   4th  ZOOMARK 1991 – Bologna, Italy.

–   EXPOZOO 91 – Parc des Expositions-Porte de Versailles, Paris, France,

     April 13-15, 1991. Aquarium Rio and Heiko Bleher showed several new

     fish species…

–   2nd. AQUARAMA 91 – International Aquarium Fish & Accessories Exhibition

     and Conference  – Singapore, June 27-30, 1991. Heiko Bleher coordinated and

     invited selected speakers from many different countries, such famous discus

     breeders as: Jack Wattley, USA; Manfred Göbel, Germany; and Kitt Panahitti,

     Thailand; Toyoshima san, Yutaka Shoji, Japan; Chris Andrews, Baltimore

     Aquarium, USA; Mike Hennessy, Ekk Will Water Live Resources, USA;

     Khinoshita san, Oriental Aquarium, Japan, Keith Davenport, OATA, UK; Willis

     Fang, Taikong, Taiwan; Kamihata san, Hikari, Japan and many others. Heiko was

     again head of judges for discus and gave two conference talks including the

     Keynote Address. On his stand he introduced new species collected and the

     publishing company Aquaprint GmbH introduced for the first time the magazine

     aqua geõgraphia – Life above and below water and the scientific aqua, Journal

     of Ichthyology and Aquatic Biology. (Later changed its name to: aqua,

     International Journal of Ichthyology.)

1992

–   INTERZOO 1992 – Nürnberg, Germany.

–   SUPREME WEEKEND OF FISHKEEPING – Weston-Super-Mare, England,

     November 1992. Heiko received for his participation and lectures a certificate

     of Appreciation.  

1993

–   1st. KOREAN DISCUS EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE sponsored by Tetra in Seoul,

     South Korea. Heiko participated by bringing all discus, doing the judging and holding

     the keynote speech and conference talks.

–   SIZOO – Salón internacional de la Zootecnia – Barcelona, Spain, 1993

–   5° ZOOMARK 1993 – Bologna, Italy.

–   3rd. AQUARAMA 93 EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE – Singapore, June 24-27. Heiko

     Bleher was head of judges and gave conference talks. He invited for lectures and

     seminars such famous Man as Professor Chen Yi-yu, Academia Sinica, Wuhan,

     China; Elwyn Segrest, Segrest Farms, USA; son of the late Hans Willy Schwartz,

     Adolf Schwartz, International Fisheries, USA, Rick Datodi, from Pet Industries,

     Australia; Marshall Meyers Coucil of PIJAC, USA, Shigezo Kamihata, first introducer

     of Nishikigoi to the world, and many others. Heiko also nominated the judges,

     including Peter Thode from the USA. It was the biggest of all Aquarama exhibitions

     until today – by number of vistors, more than 55,000 in the four open days.

1994

–   AKVARISTA HÉTUÉGE – Budapest, Hungery, March 26-26, 1994.

–   INTERZOO 1994 – Nürnberg, Germany, May 12-15, 1994. Aquarium Rio and

     Aquaprint Verlags GmbH presented new fishes and new magazines and books –

     DISCUS and supplements. But the world’s most sensational discovery and

     presented for the first time to the public was the “Fish of the Century” –

     Melanotaenia praecox – which Heiko had collected and brought back alive

     for the first time in 1991 and reproduced. In the meanwhile it is one of the

     most popular aquarium fishes of all times. About 5 Million are breed monthly

     around the world from the 13 he collected.

–   VII CONGRESS SOCIETAS EUROPAEA ICHTHYOLOGORUM – Oviedo, Spain,

     September 26-October 2, 1994.

–   ANGFA NATIONAL CONVENTION  – Brisbane, Australia.

1995

–   2nd. HONG KONG DISCUS CHAMPIONSHIP – organized by the Hong Kong

     Discus Association with the help of Heiko Bleher, who judged the Discus.

     1995. Heiko Bleher suggested some of the judges and judged discus himself.

     He also contributed to the conference with one lecture and suggested the speakers

     for the different conference topics, which most of them, mainly from Asian countries,

     were accepted.

1996

–   1st. INTERNATIONAL DISKUS CHAMPIONAT – Duisburg, Germany,

     October 03-06, 1996. Heiko had given Nobert Zajac the idea to do in Germany

     the first international discus championships. And he traveled around the world

     to invite discus breeders to show their beautiful discus. He talked to his friends

     and knowledgeable persons such as Jack Wattley, Manfred Göbel, Kitti Panahitti

     and many more persons which have contribued  to this show. He coordinated

     many details, such as: method of judging; categories (as already done by him

     before in Japan, China, Japan and elsewhere and as shown in his publication

     DISCUS Heiko Bleher & Manfred Göbel, since 1992); size of aquariums and

     display; lectures and participants; and much more. It was an international success

     and the International discus championships takes place in Duisburg every even

     year since.

     55,000 visitors appreciated Heiko’s unique display with 9 authentic biotope

     aquariums in his special designed show-stand sponsored by Rolf C. Hagen and

     Nutrafin. This display in such a form had never been done before. One enters the

     dark black room, and all one can see is the aquarium with the authentic biotopes

     in eye-level.

     biotopes – a total of 9 different ones in the specially by Heiko designed Biotope

     stand. There were biotopes of:

     October 3-6, 2002. Besides new publicatioins on his Aquapress stand, Heiko also

     displayed again the Biotope Sstand with 9 new authentic biotopes from around the

     world – most of the species he collected himself. The stand was sponsored by Rolf

     C. Hagen and presented by NUTRAFIN max. In one aquarium he had 60 Heckel

     discus from the Rio Nhamundá with authentic decoration.

–   5° SEMINARIO NAZIONALE GAEM DI ACQUARIOFILIA – Milan, Italy,

     October 13, 2002.

–   ZOOSPHERE – XI International Specialized Exhibition of Goods & Services for Pets –

     St. Petersburg, Russia, November 13-16, 2002. 15,000 visitors visited the

    100 stands. It was the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg.

2003

     Aquapress Bleher has displayed again the giant Biotope stand sponsored by

     Rolf C. Hagen and Heiko brought and decorated his unique, authentic biotopes

     of: Rio Uatumã, Brazil; Rio Araguaia, Brazil; Hunan-biotope, China; a typical Hong

     Kong aquatic biotope; Rio Demini, Brazil;  Inle-lake-biotope, Myanmar;

     Misool-island-biotope; Bolivia-biotope and one from the Rio Guaporé, Brazil.

     And here, as before and in following biotope exhibitions, the were photos around

     of the stand with the words: “NUTRAFIN präsentiert eine Poster-Serie von HEIKO

     BLEHER über die weltweite Zerstörung aquatischer Lebensräume.” In addition:

     “Ein Aquarium trägt zum Naturschutz und dem Erhalt aquatischer Lebewesen bei.

     Außerdem ist es lehrreich und das schönste Hobby dere Welt.”  More than 35,000

     visitors appreciated Heiko’s biotope stand. (This was the last time it was organized

     be the Messe Friedrichshafen, from next year on Norbert Zajac organized the

     Aqua-Fisch.)

     Again next to the Aquapress stand with new publications, Heiko decorated the

     biotope aquariums – a total of 9 giant aquariums in the biotope stand sponsored

     by Rolf C. Hagen under their brand NUTRAFIN, which was visited  this time by

     56,700 persons during those four days – on one single day over 22,000…
