The current large-scale construction boom in Dubai has attracted attention through the world and by end of 2009 the Burj Dubai (left), with over 160 stories and about 800 m (750 m already on this photo from last week) will be the highest building in the world, designed by US architect Skidmore Owings and Merrill. (But the next 1,001m tower, a centrepiece of the Madinat al Hareer, or “City of Silk” in Kuwait to house 700,000 people is already scheduled to go up soon for $150bn…)

The Burj Al Arab (left) is the world’s tallest freestanding hotel – where suites cost up to $15,000 a night. The 202-suite Burj al-Arab – or Tower of the Arabs – stands 321 metres (1,060 feet) high and floats on its own man-made island. Not only does the billowing, sail-shaped structure have its own submarine ride to an underwater restaurant complete with shark-infested aquarium, it is reputed to have the world’s fastest lifts, travelling at a eye-popping seven metres per second. The hotel’s promoters say that more than 9,000 sq. metres of gold leaf, marble, granite and crystal have been used in the interior decor. Nearby is the Dubai Marina, the world’s second largest man-made marina and a exclusive residential district.

The airport opened its new Terminal and an associated facility mid of for another A380 specific facility in 2009, tripling its total capacity to 75 million PPA. In addition the new Al Maktoum International is in progress, a project for the world’s largest airport barely 40 kilometres away and will have capacity to cater to 120 million passengers annually and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo at its 16 air cargo terminals. In 2006 the Dubai International airport was already ranked 10 on the list with a passenger. And maybe the most expensive cars can also be found in this futuristic city…
