There is still some debate as to the future  of the Aral Sea. After 10 years of research I am convinced that the lake will have disappeared completely by 2010. The rate which it has been drying up over the past 10 years has shown a continuous increase. At temperatures of more than 50°C in the shade (during summer) and constant winds one can practically see the water evaporating, even in the remains of the Maly Aral, whose last two surviving (introduced) species will soon be history like the 148 species which ones lived here. The salt content is rising relentlessly – my last record was 187 ppm – and spells eventual death to all life forms. The beautiful Pseudoscarpirhynchus kaufmanni, no longer exists. It was endemic to the Aral Sea and the Amudarya, but constructions of reservoirs and 250,000 canals in the area, built by the former Sovjet Union, interrupted its spawning migrations and it became extinct – long before all other species in the Aral Sea had died. The Amudarya, one of the two arteries of the Aral, has long dried up and the other, the Syrdarya, rarely reaches the lake today. My research began in 1997 and I have recorded all living species in the surrounding bodies of water which are also drying up relentlessly – specially with the increase of the global warming in recent years. There is an immediate need for conservation of what still lives, otherwise with the disappearing water in the once mighty two Central Asian river basins, all remaining fish species will soon be history as well…

Friedhelm is the scientific editor of aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology and Curator of Fishes, Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Heiko is the managing editor of aqua. Joseph is Professor Emeritus (since July 2002) of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, and maintains an office in the Biological Sciences Bldg. for research. In addition he is working on various taxonomic problems and heavily involved in three long-term projects: as chair for the International Committee on North American Fish Names (the 6th edition was published by the American Fisheries Society in 2004 and the next edition will be for 2010). He is doing fish specimen research and literature synthesis to continue with revisions of his “Fishes of the World”— the 4th edition was published 2006 – the work he is best known for around the world, which is the  “Fish-Bible” for ever fish researcher. In addition he is revising the The Fishes of Alberta

Eugene Clark, perhaps best known as “The Shark Lady” – so nicknamed for the title of her 1969 bestselling book The Lady and the Sharks, is a world famous ichthyologist and diver. Recent focus of her research in Papua New Guinea involved the convict fish, Pholidichthys leucotaenia, a little-studied reef dweller she gave a oral presentation. Dr. Clark, 85, and her volunteer dive team spent a combined 5,592 hours underwater studying the fish, finding the cryptic adults for the first time. The adults never leave the tunnels in which they live and their offspring may actually bring food to them – the only such instance known in the wild. Here, together with Heiko who published her and coauthors large paper in aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology, Vol. 12 (2) – www.aqua-aquapress.com. On March 15, 2008, Eugene received the highest honor bestowed by The Explorers Club, an international society dedicated to advancing the scientific exploration of land, sea, air and space by supporting research and education in the physical, natural and biological sciences. The medal is only given to those who have shown extraordinary contributions in exploration, scientific research or the welfare of humanity

Kullander, best known as the most knowledgeable Cichlidae expert living, wearing one of Heiko’s designed T-shirts, of a Symphysodon discus population Heiko discovered in the Rio Nhamundà in 1997 and Heiko with a the Fang Fang Kullander was one of the famous ichthyologists giving oral presentations in Cavtat

During a session of the Biological Species Concept, Sven O. Kullander gave a talk and ended it with the suggestion to delete “species” and replace it by “taxon”
