Discus Championship at Akvarium 2009 in Prague

Czech Republic – Prague, 17-20 September 2009

Image The Czech Discus Championships was the fourth internationally organised in the Czech Republic by the Czechoslovak Discus Club and this time with the special participation of Heiko Bleher, who had also invited Francesco denitto, from Italy to judge. The previous Czech Campionships took place in 2004 in Ostrava, and the 2005 and 2007 championships in Prague. All have been highly rated by the visitors and exhibitors, but this years topped all previous ones and had a real international standard and can be considered one of the best in Europe today.

The Championship took place in the heart of Prague, at the Botanical Garden located in walking to the historical part of this beautiful city and his historical buildings, the famous Czech cousin and the great Czech beer.

The natural light and the impact of the sun in the glasshouse, where the main venue took place, showed the discus fishes in their natural bright colours.

The Championship was part of the aquarium exhibition « Akvárium 2009 » and the visitors were able to see also the international exhibition of Killi-fishes, as well as native aquatic fauna exhibition.

Perfectly organized by the Czech Discus Club, the jury was leaded by Heiko Bleher and Francesco Denitto, and was based on 10-point-judging-evaluation. A special sheet, with the 10 most important criteria to be judged in each Discus, had been worked out by Heiko in conjunction with the other judges.

It took almost four hours for the judges to evaluate the best 3 in each category of: Stripped Turquoise; Solid Turquoise; Solid Red; Spotted; Pigeon Blood; and Open Class, and the winners were:

There were beautiful carved Bohemian crystal trophies handed out to each 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category and here the famous Czech breeder with a red strain he developed himself since 1996, Mr. Jozef Pejša, received his trophy (left) from the President of the Czech Discus Club…

Image…Francesco Denitto and Heiko Bleher received a special Diploma and also fantastic sculptured Bohemian crystal trophies… but

…two fishes should not be forgotten: The upper was one of the entries of Andrea Sassi and Antonello Greco from Italy, a beautiful Pigeon Blood, which unfortunately made only a 4th allocation in its class; and the lower one was Heiko’s Best of Show 2009, a beautiful, perfect spotted discus grown really to perfection and should have had a better place than also only a fourth position in his class.

Thank you Czechoslovak Discus Club especially Kersten for inviting me, and Miroslav Hanzel and hopefully see you next time again.
