Philippines – Manila, 18-22 November 2009
The Philippines were very excited for Heiko’s coming to judge the 2nd National Discus Championships and to give lectures & seminars. Heiko had also invited by the Director Malcolm I. Sarmiento, Jr. from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Manila for talks and by his friend Stanley Cheng. The AQUAFIESTA was held at EASTWOOD MALL from 18-22 November 2009. PALHS was organizing the Arowana, Flowerhorn, Goldfish, Koi, Livebearers, Guppy, and Planted tank competition. ABA handled the Betta competiton, PCA the Cichlid competition/exhibit while the PDS was in-charge of the Discus competition. This was the first of hopefully many more collaborations of various ornamental fish organizations from the Philippines and from around the globe.
The venue for the 2nd Philippines Discus Championship took place in the never ending growing capital, Manila, now close to 20 Million inhabitants and its Eastwood Shopping Mall. The acrylic trophies had the Aquafiesta logo on it.
There were about 52 aquariums with discus in the following categories tu judge:
1. Solid A: Solid Blue, Solid Green, Solid White (Blue Diamond, Cobalt Blue, White Diamond, Snow White)
2. Solid B: Solid Red, Solid Yellow (Red Melon, Golden Crystal, Golden Millennium, San Merah)
3. Pattern A: Turquoise (blue, red), Giant Flora, Snake-Skin Indiana-tiger
4. Pattern B: Checkerboard Pigeons, Pigeon-Blood Snake-Skin, Checkerboard Turquoise
5. Spotted A: Leopards, Ring Leopards, RSG
6. Spotted B: Leopard snake-skin, GLSS, Albino LSS
7. Open: Calico, Nebula, Red-White, Yellow-White, Red Pearl etc. (all strain that does not fall in the categories above).

There was also a Flowerhorn Competition and in the vicinity there is the St. Pio Centre…
There were a lots of visitors, simply because the exhibition and Championships was organized in the Centre of one of Manila’s largest shopping malls. Heiko was given a special gift (trophy) form the hands of the President of the Philippines’ Discus Society (very active group – see www.pds.ph ). The Grand Champion Winner, Jack Foo, received a signed copy of Bleher’s Discus, Vol.1 and the strong group of the PDS with the 3 judges in the centre (from right) Mrs. Marivi Laurel, Heiko Bleher and Mr. Eric Tiu (also with a Bleher’s limited t-shirt edition showing the solid blue Heckel Discus Variants on front and back, which Heiko discovered in the Rio Nhamundá in the 1990s…)
